The Plant Shepherd
Ben Melle Pama

Today, the Richtersveld truly stands as an ecological wonder, as the most biodiverse arid landscape in the world.
It boasts an unparalleled variety of plant species intricately adapted to withstand the most harsh conditions on Earth.
In the heart of the Richtersveld, a dire ecological crisis unfolds.
Renowned amateur & award winning botanist, Pieter van Wyk, battles against time to save the vanishing flora facing extinction.
With up to 85% of total biomass vanishing – due to rising temperatures, farming, mining, rampant plant-poaching, and climate change – the delicate ecosystem teeters on the edge.
As temperatures soar and species decline at an alarming rate, Pieter’s tireless efforts stand out as a flag of hope.
From many in his community, he is called ‘Die Plant Wagter’ which translates to ‘The Plant Shepherd’.
His gifted intuition for understanding the rhythms of nature, and ways of nurturing plants, is something to behold.
By telling this story during this great turning point of our time, it serves as a reminder of the fragility of our planet’s biodiversity and the need for meaningful action, exemplified by the work of Pieter.
